What is a Mahout?

Mahout means the elephant ‘driver’, ‘keeper’, or ‘handler’

What do you learn from this introductory course?

Learn how to ride an elephant on its neck like a mahout.

Learn how to take care of an elephant, how to handle it, how to give it verbal and physical commands.

Learn how to bathe your elephant with an opportunity to get close to it.

Mahout Learning Program in 3 Days / 2 Nights


Time  Activities

Day 1:

8:00-8:30  Arrive at our Elephant Camp and register

Receive a Mahout uniform.



Learn about how to care for the elephant and how to communicate with her– body language and Lao words.

Meet your elephant's Mahout. Learn how to sit on the elephant's neck and talk to her. Practice your knowledge and experience.


Delicious Lao-style lunch at Elephant Camp restaurant

Sit on the elephant's neck while she goes for her afternoon walk through the jungle (1 ½ hours). Practice communicating with her. Guide the elephant to the river for…

15:30  Bath time!! Learn how to help the elephant cool her skin off by sitting on her neck and splashing the river water onto her back and forehead – if you're lucky, maybe she'll help you bathe too! "Boon! Boon!"

16:30  It's free time for elephants! Guide your elephant back to the Rainforest for the night.

Free time for you too! Relax at the Lodge, enjoy life along the riverbank.

Overnight at Mahout Resort. Listen closely and you can hear the lively little geckos chatting "GEC-ko, GECko!"


Day 2:

06:00 07:40










18:00  Wake up to retrieve your elephant from the rain forest where it sleeps at night.

Setup the elephant’s howdah and ride it back to our elephant camp where you will help feed the elephant its breakfast.

Breakfast served to you at our All Lao Elephant Camp Restaurant.


Take your elephant for a ride on your own, riding on its neck and practice giving it commands.  Are you a good mahout?  Is your elephant following your directions?  Your mahout will accompany you by foot to insure safety and control.

Direct your elephant to the Nam Khan River for its bath.

Lunch is served at our elephant camp restaurant.

You serve your elephant its lunch of various grasses and elephant food to make sure it is fed.

Opportunity to practice your control of the elephant further with commands by riding it into the rain forest for approximately 1.5 hours.

Return to the Mahout Eco Lodge Dinner is served at our Lodge’s restaurant.

More education on elephants and the life of a mahout.

Free time to relax and enjoy life along the riverbank.


Day 3:

06:30  Retrieve your elephant from the Rainforest and walk to the Nam Khan River for your morning baths.

07:40  Take your elephant back to camp for breakfast. Experience feeding your elephant it's vegetarian diet.

08: 10  Say goodbye and thank you to your elephant and her Mahout "Chob chai LAI LAI!" (Thank you very much!)

Breakfast for you and get ready for your afternoon of adventure. You can choose to do a hill-tribe trek to a Khamu or Hmong village OR kayaking OR visiting Tad Sae waterfall OR the incredible Kuang Si Waterfall. (Ask for our recommendation based on the season)

16:00  Transfer back to your hotel or guesthouse

At your leisure, come to our office on the main street (Sisavangvong Road) to pick up your Mahout certificate! Have an extra passport photo? Bring it with you so we can include it on your certificate. We are located downtown; look for All Lao Travel Services, a couple of shops from the National Museum.

    Mahout Clothes,

    Transfer from / to hotel.
