What is a Mahout?

Mahout means the elephant ‘driver’, ‘keeper’, or ‘handler’

What do you learn from this introductory course?

Learn how to ride an elephant on its neck like a mahout.

Learn how to take care of an elephant, how to handle it, how to give it verbal and physical commands.

Learn how to bathe your elephant with an opportunity to get close to it.

Mahout Learning Program in 4Days / 3Nights


Time  Activities

Day 1:

8:00-8:30  Transfer from your hotel to our All Lao Elephant Camp

Arrive at our Elephant Camp

   Register and receive a mahout uniform. Learn elephant background information and the mahout’s verbal and physical ‘commands’. Meet your elephant’s mahout. Then learn how to control the elephant’s back, how you should sit on its back and neck, and how to direct or control your elephant. Then practice your knowledge and experience.

Lao-style lunch at our elephant camp restaurant.

You sit on the back of the Elephant and try to control him during the ride through the beautiful forest and country side for about 1.5 hours as well you learn how to guide the Elephant into the river

15:30  That is time for Elephant Bathing before take them back to the Rainforest then come back to the lodge.

Enjoy swimming or tubing on the scenic Nam Khan River.

16:30  Free time to relax and enjoy life along the riverbank. Overnight at Mahout Resort.


Day 2:

6:30  Wake up to retrieve your elephant from the rain forest where it sleeps at night. Setup the elephant’s howdah and ride it back to our elephant camp where you will help feed the elephant its breakfast.

7:40  Breakfast served to you at our All Lao Elephant Camp Restaurant.

8:10  Take your elephant for a ride on your own, riding on its neck and practice giving it commands.  Are you a good mahout?  Is your elephant following your directions?  Your mahout will accompany you by foot to insure safety and control.

9:00  Direct your elephant to the Nam Khan River for its bath.

12:00  Lunch is served at our elephant camp restaurant. You serve your elephant its lunch of various grasses and elephant food to make sure it is fed.

12:10  Opportunity to practice your control of the elephant further with commands by riding it into the rain forest for approximately 1.5 hours.

15:30  Return to the Mahout Eco Lodge

18:00  Dinner is served at our mahout lodge’s restaurant

19:00  More education on elephants and the life of a mahout. Free time to relax and enjoy life along the riverbank


Day 3:

06:30  Wake up to retrieve the elephant from the jungle where it stays and sleeps at night to give it a bath in the Nam Khan River..

8:00  Have your breakfast at the Mahout Lodge Restaurant.

09:00  Ride your elephant on its neck back into the jungle where it feeds during the day gaining more experience taking it up and down the surrounding hills and terrain.  The elephant will be stopping to eat plants and herbs that forms its natural diet along the route.  One of the elephant’s herbal diet is ‘khua khao hor’ which is a vine that has medicinal properties in its diet.

12:30  Have your packed picnic lunch in the rain forest.

13:30  The  guide will teach more about how to take care of the elephant.

15:30  Return to the jungle where you participate with the mahout in preparing the site where the elephant will sleep for the night.  The mahout will seek out an area where there is enough grass and food.

18:30  Dinner is served at the Mahout Lodge with ample ‘free’ or open time at  your disposal.


Day 4:

6:30  Retrieve your elephant from the rain forest and direct it to the Nam Khan for a bath which you participate in.

7:40  Ride your elephant back to our camp. Then experience feeding your elephant its grass diet and food.

8:10  After having your breakfast, and subject to your interest CHOOSE between a hill-tribe trek to a Khamu or Hmong village, OR  kayaking or bamboo rafting  OR  visiting Tad Sae OR Kuang Si Waterfall.

16:00  Transfer back to your hotel. You may drop into our office on Sisavangvong Road (on the main street a couple shops from the National Museum) to pickup your mahout certificate.   Please brig a small photo of yourself, such as a passport photo, for the certificate.




    Tours by air-conditioned vehicles with English-speaking Professional



    Mahout Cloths,

    Transfer from / to hotel.






    Personal expenses such as drinks, tips etc.

    Other services not mentioned in the program.
